CHAPTER SIX
HER lunch with Ross Dawson was a pleasant enough affair. ‘I didn’t see you at the conference this morning?’ he more enquired than commented as soon as they were seated.
‘Was it interesting?’ Phelix evaded. There was no reason why she could not have told him that she had walked a good way up a mountain to have a cup of coffee. But he might ask who with, and somehow her time with Nathan was special and private.
‘It’ll be more interesting next week when the top boys from JEPC Holdings hit town.’
‘So I believe,’ she replied. If Ross was fishing to find out how much she knew then he was going to be disappointed. Apart from the fact that she knew only the bare bones of the outsourcing contract that was said to be in the offing, she did, regardless of her father’s doubts, have a certain loyalty to her father’s company.
‘Did your father manage to get you last night?’ Ross, seeing he was getting nowhere with his feelers, changed the subject.
‘He did. Thanks for letting him know where to find me,’ she answered lightly. There was no need for Ross to know that her relationship with her father was not what she would have wished. She had not forgotten her father’s furious ‘We’ll see about that!’ when she’d said she would go out with Nathan Mallory again should he ask her. ‘What sort of a girl do you think I am?’ she asked, and had to laugh when Ross replied he knew what sort of a girl he’d like her to be.
Her laughter died when, out of nowhere, it seemed, there was Nathan Mallory! She saw him favour Ross Dawson with a stern look, though he was quite pleasant to him when he asked, ‘Good lunch?’
‘Depends who you’re with,’ Ross replied with a warm look to her.
Nathan gave a small inclination of his head to acknowledge her, and walked on by. Somehow, her insides in knots again just from seeing him, Phelix carried on walking as if she hadn’t a care in the world. But she was giving serious thought to going home to England. It had been less than a couple of hours since she had last seen him, for goodness’ sake, and just seeing him again was making her feel all over the place. She had grown used to being the one in control of her life, but that control appeared to be slipping. It was very off-putting!
She saw Nathan again that afternoon. He was with other people but glanced over to her, and seemed about to smile. Phelix inclined her head a little to return the compliment, and saw him grin—and felt a huge mirthful grin of her own coming on; her lips tweaked but she hastily looked away. Honestly—what
